Thorir Hergeirsson

Icelandic Handball Coach and Former Player

Born in Selfoss, Iceland, Thorir Hergeirsson moved to Oslo, Norway, in 1986 to pursue his studies.

Thorir holds a degree in sports education and a master’s in sports psychology and coaching from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences.

A dedicated handball coach since 1980, he has worked with both men’s and women’s teams in clubs across Iceland and Norway. His extensive coaching career includes serving as:

  • Head coach of the Norwegian women’s national handball team (2009–2024), leading them through 20 major championships (European Championships, World Championships, and the Olympics), winning 17 medals—including 10 golds.
  • Junior women’s national team coach (1994–2000) and part of the coaching team under Marit Breivik (2001–2008), securing 8 additional medals during this period.

From 2025 onward, Thorir will focus on consulting and lecturing, sharing his expertise in coaching, leadership, and sports psychology.
